The OpenRouter listing calls it a “stealth model” and says it was “developed and operated by a third-party provider who has chosen to remain anonymous during this preview.”
So whoever built it doesn’t want to be known. Yet.
The Stripe Connection
Here’s where it gets interesting. Stripe CEO Patrick Collison posted on X that Ox Alpha is “very impressive.”
Why does that matter? Stripe is in the process of acquiring OpenRouter. So the CEO of the company buying OpenRouter is praising a mysterious model on their platform.
That doesn’t confirm anything, but it’s certainly notable.
The Speculation
Unsurprisingly, most of the speculation has focused on China.
AI analyst Andrew Curran posted that initial speculation focused on the GLM models developed by Chinese company Z.ai, but “this morning people seem less sure of anything.”
An article on Wccftech first suggested the evidence pointed to GLM, but an update suggested Ox Alpha could be an unreleased version of Microsoft’s MAI.
On Reddit, opinions are split. One post declares Ox Alpha “can’t be the Chinese,” while another expresses “high confidence” that it is, in fact, Chinese.
